Abstract form of female with drapery and bend of body completing the form. There is no delineation of arms or legs. Head shape is rounded with a defined nose and indents for eyes.
American Woman was funded and donated to the university by two Ohio University alumni: the artist, Professor Emeritus of Art David Hostetler, MFA '49, and Distinguished Visiting Professor and Ohio University Board of Trustees member Jeanette Grasselli, BS '50, DS '78 HON. It was the first sculpture added to the Ohio University campus since 1865.
Sculpture is located in Wolfe Garden, outside of the Alden Library's fourth-floor entrance.
