Pioneer Family

Life-sized, realistically rendered bronze sculpture of a "frontier couple" with a child, typical of 1802. The male figure represents the great-grandfather of a current Hamilton resident whose family has been active in the community since their arrival. The man carries a slung flintlock over his right shoulder. The woman has a baby in her arms and a bible in her right hand. They stand on a common base turned slightly towards one another. The sculpture was a gift of Dr. John A Stewart and his wife, Marian Stewart, and the artist used a photo of the couple from their youth as the basis for the faces of the people depicted in the sculpture.

The work was obtained through the efforts of the Hamilton, Ohio City of Sculpture, Inc. project.
