Salem No.7

A geometric Cor-Ten steel piece that consists of six imposing cubes, each protruding from a separate face on a hidden, central seventh,The cubes are all congruent: made from the same material, same size, even the same angle. This means that from different angles, due to the differences in lighting on each face, the sculpture takes on a unique form. The canted angle being what it is, the highlights pop and the shadows lay back, giving the viewer a fascinating 2 dimensional image no matter where it is viewed from.

The installation outside of the hospital brings a unique significance to the shape of the sculpture. If it were placed level, the sculpture is also the shape of the medical cross. The piece lies on its side with a multitude of angles to see the cross from, signifying a universal openness for healing.

Antoni Milkowski was a 20th century minimalist sculptor who liked to focus on repetition of patterns and shapes, as well as how negative space impacted a sculpture. In Salem No. 7, the repeating cubic forms, placed at an angle where the negative space can cut into the image shows a true mastery of his style.
