"Marketplace/meeting place: An Urban Memorial"

1994 / Angelica Pozo / Cleveland

Pozo1.jpg

This piece is a tree planter/bench made from concrete, ceramic mosaic, ceramic relief sculpture & historic artifacts.
This piece preserves the history of the site of Cleveland's Progressive Field Ballpark and Gund Arena sports complex. At the time of the creation of this piece, the field was known as Jacob's field, but has since changed to Progressive by 2008. Jacob's Field's naming rights were acquired in 1994(the year it opened) by team owner Richard Jacobs, who paid for rights until the end of 2006.

Angelica Pozo and Penny Rakoff's bench is located in one of the busiest parts of Cleveland near the Central Market. According to Pozo, the two artist " used it [the Central Market] as the focal point of our piece as well. The market theme is emphasized with the frieze of market goods along the bottom of the bench and reproductions of historic images chronicle the change and development of the area from its natural and rustic beginnings through the demolition and land clearing leading up to its present identity".
