Poles
1968 / Robert Wilson / Loveland
This sculpture, made from over 500 repurposed telephone poles, is installed in a field on the Grailville property in Loveland, OH. There are two components to the work: one is a set of three nested arches, and the other is a series of telephone poles of varying heights stuck into the ground and arranged in an amphitheater-type configuration. The work was originally intended to have a combined function as an outdoor sculpture and performance space. It was restored and rededicated in 2001 for a "PoleStock" festival of events in collaboration with the Contemporary Arts Center of Cincinnati. However, as of 2021 only the arches portion of the work is visible and the remainder has been overtaken by vegetation.
