Edwin McMasters Stanton (December 19, 1814 – December 24, 1869) was an American lawyer and politician who served as Secretary of War under the Lincoln Administration during most of the American Civil War. This impressive bronze stands in front of the Jefferson County Courthouse in Steubenville, Ohio.


The engraved plaque on the front of the statue reads: "Edwin McMasters Stanton. Born in this city December 19, 1814. U.S. Attorney General 1860 1861. Secretary of War 1862 1868. U.S. Supreme Court 1869. Died December 24, 1869. Erected 1911."

The 18-foot bronze likeness of Stanton, unveiled in 1911, was sculpted by Alexander Doyle of Steubenville.
